Together, we’ll celebrate three individuals, businesses or organizations that are exceptional stewards of the physical and cultural landscape that is Greater Erie. The 2017 Greater Erie Award recipients are the Benedictine Sisters of Erie for The Studio at St. Mary's: Space to Create, Erie Insurance for the adaptive reuse of the PA National Guard Armory, and the Lawrence Park Dinor. The award reception features a keynote address given by an acclaimed lecturer in the fields of historic preservation and urban planning. Small City Took Kit, this year’s keynote will be given by urban planner Terry Schwarz. Small cities like Erie, Pa. are facing big challenges in a rapidly changing world. Globalization, climate change, infrastructure issues, and shifting demographics can have dramatic impacts on smaller cities. These places need to simultaneously reinvent themselves while preserving their authenticity and built heritage. Terry Schwarz, director of Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, will discuss her on-going work with small cities and design and revitalization opportunities for Erie, as well as the unique potential of cities, small and large, in the Great Lakes basin. Ms. Schwarz is the Director of Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC). Her work at the CUDC includes neighborhood and campus planning, commercial and residential design guidelines, stormwater management and green infrastructure strategies. Terry launched the CUDC’s Shrinking Cities Institute in 2005 in an effort to understand and address the implications of population decline and large-scale urban vacancy in Northeast Ohio. As an outgrowth of the Shrinking Cities Institute, she established Pop Up City, a temporary use initiative for vacant and underutilized sites in Cleveland. In 2009, Terry received the Cleveland Arts Prize for Design. She teaches in the graduate design curriculum for the KSU College of Architecture and Environmental Design. She has a Bachelor’s in English from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.
