Local Florists Offer Up Bouquets to Mothers

The American adult spends an average of $42.48 on flowers for Mother's Day — the most by dollar amount after Valentine's Day and Christmas/Chanukah. With Erie County entering the Yellow Phase of Pennsylvania's plan for reopening the economy on May 8, it looks as if local florists will be able to petal their wares for the big holiday after all.

Before the weekend arrives, however, they will be freely offering bouquets to society's most prominent caregivers. The female residents of LECOM Senior Living Center may be retired from work, but few mothers ever permanently dissociate from their maternal role, even as the generations stack below them. Meanwhile, the facility's nurses and staff commit themselves daily to nurturing and providing for not only these women, but also their male residents and their families, addressing physical and adaptive needs while allaying worries and concerns.

If anyone deserves to stop and smell the roses, it's these folks, and four local florists — Gary's Flower Shoppe, Larese Floral Design, A Floral Affair and Foster's Rose of Sharon Shop —are partnering to deliver. A total of 144 flowers and vases will be distributed among Senior Living Center residents, with any leftover vases or flowers donated to the facility's nurses and staff in honor of their hard work and dedication. The group will make the delivery to the LECOM Senior Living Center this Wednesday, May 6 at 2 p.m.

We at the Erie Reader are grateful for all the women who've opened up our world and allowed us to blossom.
