Donors in Demand for Erie Community Blood Drive

Type O blood, convalescent plasma especially precious commodities

MONDAY, MAR. 29

Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month is drawing to a close; Vitalant, the nation's largest independent, nonprofit blood services provider is hoping it will not be in vain.

The organization encourages healthy, eligible donors to schedule an appointment between 2 and 6 p.m. at the Erie Community Blood Drive, happening Monday at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel. In particular demand are Type O blood (the universal donor type), blood platelets (clot-forming cells), and convalescent plasma (plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies) to treat COVID-19 patients. Appointments can be made at vitalant.org or by calling 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825).

Millions of Americans suffer from bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and sickle cell disease, with symptoms such as chronic pain, joint damage, and life-threatening uncontrollable bleeding. These population segments rely on healthy blood donations for the blood components (e.g. plasma, platelets) required to both survive emergencies and live fuller lives.

For a list of more upcoming blood drives in the Erie area, check in with the Erie Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York.

2 to 6 p.m. // Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel, 55 W. Bay Drive // vitalant.org
