Local Album Review // In Addendum // Boom!
3.5/5 stars
They don't call them growing pains for no reason. Erie's own In Addendum is composed of four teenagers that, with the addition of Boom!, already have two records under their belt. And it is, quite frankly, fascinating to hear them find themselves over the course of Boom!'s 30 minutes of relatively lo-fi alt-rock. The record itself is In Addendum's most cohesive piece of work yet while still allowing them to flirt with different subgenres – one minute, the band is emulating chaotic White Stripes riffs (opening track "Decorticate Me"); the next, they're incorporating horns into slacker jams ("No Country") or experimenting with jam band-adjacent noodling ("Dominoes"). Boom! features all of the DIY charm you would expect from a group this young (production included), but they shine most when their songs are heartfelt and simple, like on the acoustic highlight "Nothing to Say." As a whole, Boom! is an impressive collection of songs for the group, and if they stay the path, it won't be long before they grow into one of Erie's most promising rock acts.
