Scholarship race can be completed anywhere, anytime

The LECOM Ice Cream 5K typically boasts one of the largest participant fields of the summer, seasoned and novice runners alike packing the LECOM Medical Fitness and Wellness Center parking lot. It could be because of all the positive energy surrounding the event; or the beautifully shaded, tree-lined course, with neighbors cheering you along the way; or maybe it's the scoop of Brusters Real Ice Cream waiting for each runner beyond the finish line.

Mostly, however, it's because it supports our next generation of healthcare professionals through the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund, making an education at LECOM's Erie, Greensburg, Bradenton (Fla.), or Elmira (N.Y.) campuses more affordable.

As with most annual events, this year's race will be a little different — huffing and puffing in close quarters with hundreds of strangers is obviously not advisable during a respiratory pandemic. So LECOM administrators are opting for a new format. The LECOM Finish Line for the Front Line 2020 Virtual 5K will serve the same cause more safely, as it can be completed anytime and anywhere throughout the month of May.

After registering at livefitrace.com/lecomvirtual5k, participants will have until May 31 to run, walk, bike, or use an elliptical to cover the 3.1-mile distance and upload their results (and an optional "finish line" photo). T-shirts and/or medals will be mailed in June.

"The shirt and medal will serve as a reminder of participants' contribution and involvement in honoring those currently on the frontline as well as our future medical professionals," said David Hopkins, director of the LECOM Wellness Center.

Hopkins encourages you to partake not only for their sake, but yours. "The LECOM Medical Fitness and Wellness Center encourages an active lifestyle, and a Virtual 5K is a great way to promote wellness and a feeling of community, especially when our current situation is not conducive to large public gatherings. This is a stressful time for a lot of people, and exercise is a notable method of stress reduction."

So get into a good pair of running shoes and get out there — word is there might still be ice cream waiting for you in the freezer upon completion.

Matt Swanseger (mswanseger@eriereader.com) has successfully finished the LECOM Ice Cream 5K twice, majestic human gazelle that he is. He will race you for your dessert any day.
