May 2025 Pennsylvania Primary Election Results
Women take wins across the board in the primary
The May 2025 Pennsylvania Primary election was held throughout Erie County on Tuesday, May 20. Voter turnout was low, at just under 25 percent of all registered voters in Erie County. However, in the races for mayor and city controller, those who voted in this year's primary propelled female candidates to the general election.
In the mayoral race, Daria Devlin narrowly overtook two-term incumbent mayor Joe Schember by just over 400 votes. Devlin spoke at 1020 Collective Tuesday night after the election results, thanking her campaign team, supporters, and Schember for his 8 years as mayor. "Here's the deal, this is the primary. We have a general election to win and we are going to fight just as hard to get there," Devlin said.
Brooke Sanfilippo took the win against City Council member Ed Brzezinski and City Council Member Chuck Nelson in the tight race for City Controller. Current City and County Council members dominated the Democratic nominations for City Council, including City Council Members Jasmine Flores and Maurice "Mo" Troop and County Council member André Horton. Marilyn Pol secured the fourth City Council spot for the Democrats. Since there were only four Republicans running for City Council, all will be going to the general election.
Branching out into the county races, Christina Vogel won the democratic nomination for County Executive over Perry Wood by over 1,000 votes. Vogel thanked her supporters on her Facebook campaign page: "We are one step closer to change! All thanks to you!"
Additional local election information is as follows:
- The Erie School Director nominations include Leah Merski, Gary N. Horton, and Zakaria Sharif, who were cross-filed and won both the Democratic and Republican nominations. Jay Breneman also won the Democratic nomination and Hayan Aloush for the Republican nomination.
