May You Always Be Satisfied: Renee Elise Goldsberry at MIAC

There are some seasons where everything seems to click – and right on cue for September, Erie will be gifted a fabulous concert by the masterful Renée Elise Goldsberry.

Music lovers are most likely familiar with Goldsberry for her well-known and award-winning role as Angelica Schuyler in Broadway's Hamilton, while many fans were first introduced to her through her extremely popular "Satisfied" when it was re-released on her solo album. And this month, Erie audiences can attend a concert that showcases the high-level performance and many fine layers of Goldsberry's career.

"I think audiences can expect a concert that showcases just how versatile Ms. Goldsberry is. Renée Elise Goldsberry is an extraordinary artist who seems capable of doing just about anything," says Brett Johnson, Ph.D., artistic director of the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture. "There is also tremendous educational value in simply watching a world-class artist at work."

Attendees will experience a show that draws selections from different eras of Goldsberry's career: Broadway (The Lion King,  Rent, and Hamilton), her debut solo album Who I Really Am (incorporating her soulful sound with pop, folk, gospel, and blues influences), and the widely acclaimed television series Girls5Eva (featuring a '90s girl group on its comeback tour).

"For our students, particularly those studying theater and music," says Johnson, "the opportunity to see an artist of Ms. Goldsberry's caliber command the concert stage offers its own kind of master class in performance, musicianship, storytelling, and communication. That kind of experience is an important part of what MIAC brings to the Mercyhurst experience."

Goldsberry's tour offers us an inspired performance for late summer. "What excites me most is the opportunity for Erie audiences to experience that full range of artistry live," says Johnson.
