The Loss of Democracy, Then and Now: Threats in Germany, 1932 and 2017

SPEAKER: AMY CARNEY,PH.D. On September 24, 2017, a political shockwave reverberated across Germany as election results came in. For the first time since 1945, a far-right party – the Alternative for Germany (AfD) – had gained enough votes to enter parliament. While the recent success of the AfD does not completely mirror the trajectory of the Nazi Party, Dr. Amy Carney, a history professor at Penn State Behrend, will explain the similarities and differences between the two parties, which shows how both of them used Germany's democratic systems in the 1930s and the 2010s to erode democracy.
