Cognitive Conception: When Men Become Fathers

Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 7 PM

Conception occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg, and in traditional pregnancies, a gestation period begins in the mother that transforms her body and mind inrecognizable, physiological ways, which, of course, is well-documented and studied. But it's less known what happens to men during the gestation period. For men, who do not become physically pregnant, the announcement of pregnancy is initially contingent upon the man's acceptance or rejection of his new role identity as a father – otherwise referred to as "cognitive conception." What is cognitive cognition, "when" do men become fathers, and why should we discuss it? Join JES Scholar-in Residence Dr. Parris Baker as he explores this topic, unpacking why it matters and what it means to the relationship between a father, a mother, their baby, and society.
