Mercyhurst University Sustainability Book Discussion
Book Pickup: Beginning Monday, November 9
Book Club: Monday, December 14 from 5-7 PM
at Werner Books & Coffee
In anticipation of the April 20th public lecture by narrative nonfiction author Terry Tempest Williams, Mercyhurst University's Office of Sustainability is introducing a mobile book club for her most well-known book, Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place.
Refuge explores the grief of Terry's mother's battle with cancer through the lens of the rising of the Great Salt Lake, which threatens a delicate ecosystem of birds. Combining personal struggle with ecological sensitivity, Terry's background as an ecologist, poet, and Mormon offer a uniquely beautiful story that encompasses natural inevitabilities within our landscapes and our families.
Please be warned, much of this book includes details of dying and death which may be triggering.
30 books will be provided for FREE: first come first serve. Signs ups for the books begin on October 28th, with book pick-up beginning November 9th. Anyone is welcome to join! Please note: these books must be returned. Please do not write in them or damage them beyond normal wear and tear. Books which are not returned must be replaced by the participant.
The book club will meet once at Werner Books on Monday, December 14th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. To sign up, please visit Werner Books or email them at wernerbooks1@gmail.com. With questions about the club itself, please email moderator Molly Tarvin, Sustainability Coordinator at Mercyhurst University, at mtarvin@mercyhurst.edu.
