Edwina Tries… Joining an A Cappella Group
Singing along with the Flagship City Chorus
I have always loved to sing. I first remember singing in church and shortly thereafter, to Kool and the Gang, the Dream Girls soundtrack, and Earth, Wind and Fire. I had a brief foray back into a church rock band in my early 20s, but for the most part, it's been just singing in the shower for me. When I saw the local Sweet Adelines Chorus posted something on social media comparing themselves to The Jazzagals from Schitt's Creek and were open to membership...I knew I needed to try it out.
Sweet Adelines International has made a recent name change to SingUnited International. The local chapter is still called Flagship City Chorus and is made up of women who are grouped by voice into barbershop and a cappella harmonies. SingUnited prides itself on being inclusive and non-audition in style. According to their website (singunited.org), they believe in singing for well-being and raising money for local charities.
When I visited, I was greeted warmly by the existing members, introduced to the group leader, Kim Ackerman, and placed into the bass section. In all-female choruses, the basses sing an octave higher than standard bass parts. We sang some traditional Americana songs, some hymns, and a rousing rendition of "All About That Bass," the Meghan Trainor bop that takes on new meaning in this setting. I was provided sheet music with lyrics and jumped right in. It was a little intimidating because these women are having fun but also take music very seriously, many with the ability to read sheet music and with strong and lovely voices.
By the last couple of songs, I was singing less and listening more. The ladies applauded my efforts, each told me a little about themselves, and invited me back. They discussed their upcoming performances at local events and marked their calendar for a holiday show in December. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them.
There is a yearly membership fee to join, with discounted rates for those under 25. If you are looking for a creative outlet that involves singing, camaraderie, and entertaining the public, you should definitely go and visit the local Adelines. Tell them Edwina sent you!
