Local Album Review // Matthew Crays Crays & Co. // Live at the Barn
3.75/5 stars
With over a decade of artistry under his belt, Matthew Crays is a staple of Erie's arts scene. He's earned it, both personally and professionally. Crays' skillful storytelling (often revolving around recovery) feels universally relatable, while his interchangeable mix of folk, blues, and funk appeals to anyone with an appreciation for versatile singer-songwriter types. While the ideal means to experience Crays' music is still by catching a live performance somewhere in the city, Crays & Co. Live at the Barn is an impressive alternative that allows newcomers to become familiar and fans to relive their past experiences. As with any live recording, this bold collection of songs captures every high and subtle flaw of the performance (and I mean that in a complimentary sense). Crays & Co. sound absolutely electric on the lively closing track "Oh My, Mamma." After several raw, personal cuts ("Rough Rider," "Lover"), "Oh My Mama" feels like a technical marvel, boasting a clear, lively mix of organ, electric guitars, and vocals. It's the perfect note to go out on, leaving listeners eager to catch a show or explore the rest of Crays' discography.
