More Bang for Your Buck-ley: Betty Buckley's Back at MIAC

Artist-in-residence Betty Buckley returns to Mercyhurst University to work with theater students in a one-on-one workshop, followed by a public performance at the Walker Recital Hall.

A packed schedule awaits award-winning actress and singer Betty Buckley as she makes her return to Mercyhurst this month. The school's artist-in-residence is set to hold workshops with Mercyhurst students from Sunday, April 12 through Thursday, April 16, followed by a public concert on Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Walker Recital Hall.

As the recipient of honorary doctorates from both Boston Conservatory of Music and Marymount Manhattan College, Buckley has taught at a number of higher education institutes throughout the country, including Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, and Syracuse University. She has also led workshops for the Williamstown Theater Festival and the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Festival, and has been on faculty at T. Schreiber Studio in New York City for over 50 years.

Known best for being a trailblazer in modern musical theatre, Buckley has played iconic roles in 1776, Pippin, Carrie, and Cats, with the last earning her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Buckley has also featured in a multitude of off-Broadway productions as well as on both the silver screen and in television roles.

Inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2012, she has also been awarded multiple prestigious honors, including the 2017 Julie Harris Award for Lifetime Achievement from The Actors Fund and the 2023 American Songbook Association Lifetime Achievement Award. She was also recognized with the Sarah Siddons Award for Outstanding Performance in a Chicago theatrical production for her work on the national tour of Hello, Dolly!

Buckley recently wrote, narrated, and produced the animated short film The Mayfly, with music by her longtime musical director and pianist Christian Jacob, who will join her at her Mercyhurst performance. Buckley has recorded 18 albums and continues to tour extensively with her ensemble of musicians.
