Two legendary jazz performers are coming to Artlore Studios

Sunday, Jun. 9

Artlore Studios is set to host two legendary jazz performers as their US tour makes a stop in Erie. Saxophonist David Murray is a prolific musician with an extensive discography, with over 150 separate releases under his belt. Percussionist Kahil El Zabar is a former chair of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Neither of the two are strangers to collaboration, whether it's with other big-name artists or each other, making their Erie performance a must-see show for local jazz enthusiasts.

Noted for their unique blend of genres that ties together avant-garde of both the past and the present, Murray once described his relationship with El Zabar as "stream of consciousness," creating "spirituality-based original sounds." Born in Oakland, California, Murray was originally influenced by (and associated with) the free jazz movement but quickly separated himself by incorporating more modern sounds into his compositions. Murray would go on to become a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet.

Meanwhile, El Zabar, a Chicago native and multi-instrumentalist, spent the 1970s starting groups like Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. The fact that both of these groups are still active, paired with a history of collaborations with the likes of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon, is a testament to El Zabar's spirit and commitment to the art.

And what's a night of live music without some light breakfast desserts? Fortunately for guests, A Waffle Miracle will be making themselves available for all of your "brinner" needs. — Aaron Mook
