Sunday, Dec. 29

Erie native Astro Rys' latest film is titled Jesus, but it's not about who you'd think. The film depicts the infamous artist G.G. Allin, who passed away on June 28,1993. Rys' thesis film is not a straightforward biopic, however, as it utilizes the unique avenues of dance, animation, poetry, collage, and interview to explore the themes behind G. G. Allin's life and art. The film is a serious meditation on abuse, trauma, and suicide, using Allin's last day alive as a way to explore these ideas. Sensitive audience may want to be weary or speak with the filmmaker before the show in order to avoid specific scenes.

As a Thee Films release (Astro's production company), the Erie Movie House premiere is set to feature musical acts before the show, including the genre-defying freak country/garage punk of Jovial Cacophony. It's a fitting homecoming for Rys, who continues to thrill us with stimulating art and challenge the way we think about the creators behind the art that we love. — Aaron Mook
